Summer Program 2010

Organic Gardening

June 21 - July 9, 2010

Are you having a hard time getting your child to eat vegetables?  Does your child think that food comes from the grocery store?  This is understandable in our era in which we have become increasingly disconnected from our food and energy sources.  At MCH, we want to reconnect our children to the world around us.  By getting their hands dirty in our large garden space, children will be reacquainted with where their food comes from.  They will experience the wonder of watching a seed grow into a plant.  With some hard work and perhaps some luck, they will experience the fine taste of vegetables grown without chemicals.  Maybe, even the child who won’t eat her vegetables will find that she really likes them—it has happened here at MCH.

Urban Wildlife

July 12 - 30, 2010

Did you ever wonder why we spend so much time talking with children about animals that are largely inaccessible?  Lions, Tigers, and Kangaroos are fascinating creatures but live on different continents.  Closer to home, our woodland animals such as Deer, Moose, and Wolves are also a great study.  In order to see any of these animals, however, children would have to go to the zoo, be lucky on a campout, or do some serious traveling.  Our Urban Wildlife unit will propose that we look closer to home.  After all, there is life all around us.  Some of which only comes out at night but much of it is observable during the day.  All of it is more tangible to the children.  So get ready for some interesting conversations about insects and animals that you maybe never noticed before.

Fliers

August 2 - 20, 2010

This session we’ll utilize the beautiful weather to fly our amazing fliers: kites, Styrofoam gliders, helicopters, parachutes, and all sorts of paper airplanes. We’ll see how different amounts of air affect a balloon rocket’s range. Other experiments include filling a huge plastic tube by blowing into a funnel, using our own air power to move a feather, using a bicycle pump to fill a tire. At the end of the session we will have The Great Montessori Fly In! We’ll fly all our fliers for the other classes and cheer as they are released.
